Faculty Instructor  at Duke University Medical Center for in-patient psychiatric units treating multiple disorders (chronic pain, depression, anxiety, obsessive/compulsive, psychosis and anorexia). Also carried private practice caseload of individuals in longer-term therapy with problems of trauma related to physical and emotional abuse. 

Consultant for Duke University Medical Center for patients with alcohol/drug addictions.  Provided assessments and treatment recommendations for medical teams in l200 bed trauma hospital with special focus on patients in liver transplant program, maternity, cardiac and trauma units.  Provided individual and marital therapy and co-led groups for clients recovering from addiction.

Eating disorder specialist with seven years experience at treatment programs for anorexia nervosa, bulimia and severe obesity.  Individual therapist and presenter at Duke University Diet and Fitness Center, Structure House, Inc., Raleigh Community Hospital. Family therapist on Duke University’s in-patient anorexia unit.


Teaching and Training Experience

Faculty instructor to physicians, nurses and hospital staff at Duke University Medical Center.

  • Provided in-service workshops on: treatment of alcoholism in liver transplant patients; assessing and treating dual diagnosis patients; biases/reactions to addicted patients; special issues for impaired co-workers; treatment of families.  Developed curriculum and taught second year medical students in eight week rotations.(1991-1994)

Lecturer at Duke University Diet and Fitness Center.

  • Designed workshops on assertiveness, anger and conflict resolution.  Presented weekly lectures on lifestyle change, behavior modification in long-term weight management and relapse prevention.  Trained and certified as facilitator for Pacific Institute’s Investment in Excellence.(1994-1996) 

Trainer for Sexual Harassment Prevention Office, Office of the President of Duke University., Allen Bldg, Durham, NC  (part-time) (August 1994-May 1995)

  • Assessed education needs, developed orientations and training on harassment issues for employees and supervisors. 

Trainer on Diversity for Carolina Power and Light

  •  Presenter and trainer in diversity training program for supervisors and employees during two-year program (1996-1997)

Trainer and presenter in employee assistance programs. 

  • Workshops for corporations and city employees on topics including how to deal with the angry public; prevention of post-traumatic stress syndrome in police and emergency workers; alcohol/drug problems in the workplace; coping with change. (see Human Affairs, Intl and Raleigh EAP, above)

  • One year interim position, managing contracts and marketing, overseeing staff of thirteen in three clinical offices, implementing national office’s policies.(1989-1990) 

  • Supervisory management consultant to managers in Research Triangle Park based corporations (including IBM, Aetna, Nortel) under contract with Human Affairs, International. Consultation on employees with emotional, relationship or substance abuse problems and assessment/management of suicidal/homicidal staff.
